Soaking up the Rays

This image was captured in late June, close to the longest day, meaning that it was captured very late into this beautiful summer evening. The Scottish Mountain Hare are an indigenous species unlike the rabbit and brown hare which were introduced by man. Generally they can be found on heather moorlands.

Female mountain hares give birth between March and July and produce between one and four litters a year, of 1-3 offspring. I have observed that leverets can generally be found in the same areas year on year as if the female uses a safe area as a nursery.  Once the leveret reaches a few weeks old it moves on to make way for the next generation of mountain hare making more and more difficult to keep track of a specific leveret.

Fortunately one of the areas used as a nursery year after year gets illuminated by the very last rays of the setting sun making it possible to capture the leveret in warm evening light but also in back lighting such as here.
