Golden Glow
When searching for an area suitable for a red squirrel photography I look for a number of things including a natural looking habitat where they are likely to live; an area that will get good light in winter when the red squirrel looks at its best and also an area that offers the best perspective to photograph these iconic creatures whether they are on the ground or up in a tree. Eye level with your subject is often the most pleasing perspective and with the right terrain it is possible to play with the light and achieve eye level images at the same time.
This type of image uses back lighting and produces this effect where it is the edges of the squirrel that are brightest giving the rim lighting effect. I do enjoy playing with the light but in a forest this can be a challange as it is important to avoid highlights in an area of the image, normally the background, that will distract the viewers attention away from the main subject.
